How to choose a web development company — 10 questions to ask before you hire
Ten questions to ask before you hire a web developer or agency, the red flags to watch for, and how to compare quotes fairly.
Choosing who builds your website is a bigger decision than choosing the design. The right developer gives you a fast, secure site you can grow for years. The wrong one leaves you with a site you can't edit, can't move, and can't get support for.
Here are the questions to ask before you hire — and the red flags that should make you walk away.

10 questions to ask
- Can I see live websites you've built? Not just screenshots — real sites you can open on your phone and test.
- Who will actually do the work? The person you speak to, a team, or a subcontractor?
- What technology do you recommend, and why? A good answer depends on your needs, not on what they always use.
- Is the price fixed, and what exactly is included? Ask for a written scope.
- Who owns the website, domain and hosting? It should be you — in your name, with your logins.
- Can I edit the content myself? Ask for a demo of the admin.
- How do you handle SEO and speed? Titles, structured data, mobile speed and redirects from your old site should be part of the build, not an extra.
- What happens after launch? Training, support, updates, backups and how much they cost.
- How will we communicate, and how often? Weekly updates and a staging link to see progress are good signs.
- What if we want changes later? Hourly rate, retainer, or a new quote?
Red flags

- No live work to show, or only template demos.
- The domain or hosting registered in their name, not yours.
- A price with no written scope — "everything included" usually means nothing defined.
- Guaranteed #1 Google rankings. Nobody can promise that.
- No mention of maintenance, backups or security after launch.
- Pressure to decide fast or pay everything upfront.
How to compare quotes fairly
When one quote is ₹30,000 and another is ₹1,50,000, they're rarely quoting for the same thing. Put them side by side and compare: number of page designs, features, content writing, SEO setup, training, support period and who owns what. The cheapest quote often leaves out the parts you discover later. (See how much a website costs in India for typical ranges.)
A good partner, in short
Look for someone who asks about your business before talking about design, shows real work, gives a fixed written scope, puts everything in your name, and plans for after launch.
