Does ChatGPT know your business? A 10-minute test for local businesses
People now ask ChatGPT and Google's AI for the best doctor or shop nearby. How AI picks which local business to name, a free 10-minute test, and what to fix.
A patient in Anand opens ChatGPT and types: "Best skin doctor near me who is good with acne?"
ChatGPT names three clinics. Yours isn't one of them — even though you've been practising for twelve years and half the town knows you.
This is happening more every month. People still search Google, but they also ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's own AI answers — and those tools give a short list of names, not ten blue links. If you're not on the list, you don't get the call.
The good news: AI doesn't pick names at random. It repeats what it can find and trust about you online. That's something you can fix.

How AI decides which business to name
When someone asks for a local recommendation, AI tools look at what the web says about the businesses in that area. In plain terms, they check four things:

- Your website — does it clearly say what you do, where, and for whom? "Dermatologist in Anand treating acne, pigmentation and hair loss" is easy for AI to repeat. A homepage that just says "Welcome to our clinic" isn't.
- Your Google Business Profile — category, hours, address, photos. AI tools (especially Google's) lean heavily on it. Here's our Google Business Profile checklist.
- Reviews — how many, how recent, and what they say. Reviews that mention specifics ("treated my acne in three months") help AI match you to specific questions.
- Mentions elsewhere — Justdial, Practo, IndiaMART, local news, association lists, directories. The more trustworthy places that name you with the same details, the more confident AI is that you're real and good.
If any of these is missing or out of date, AI has less to go on — and it names someone else.
The 10-minute test
Do this today. It's free.
Step 1 — ask like a customer (3 minutes). Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. In each, ask:
- "Best [your service] in [your town]"
- "[Your service] near [your area] open on Sunday"
- "Is [your business name] in [your town] good?"
Write down: were you named? Who was named instead? Were your details (phone, address, timings) correct?
Step 2 — check what AI says about you (2 minutes). Ask directly: "What do you know about [your business name], [your town]?" If the answer is vague, wrong, or about a different business with a similar name, AI doesn't know you well yet.
Step 3 — Google yourself (5 minutes). Search your business name. Look at the first page:
- Is your Google profile showing, with photos and good reviews?
- Is your website there, and does it load quickly on your phone?
- Are your Justdial / Practo / IndiaMART listings correct, with the same phone and address?
You now know exactly where the gaps are.
What to fix, in order
- Fix your Google Business Profile first. It's free and has the biggest effect on local AI answers. Right category, true hours, real photos, replies to every review.
- Make your website say it plainly. On the homepage, in normal words: what you do, the town and areas you serve, your main services, your phone and address. One clear sentence near the top does more than a page of slogans.
- Add a short question-and-answer section to your website: "Do you treat acne?", "What are your timings?", "Do you take walk-ins?" — written the way customers ask. AI tools often quote answers like these directly.
- Get more specific reviews. After a good visit, send your review link on WhatsApp and ask the customer to mention what you helped with.
- Make your details match everywhere. Same name, address and phone on your website, Google profile, Justdial, Practo, Facebook and Instagram. Mismatches make AI less sure.
- Get mentioned. A local newspaper story, an association member list, a supplier's "where to buy" page — every trusted mention helps.
Then run the 10-minute test again in a month and compare.
What not to do
- Don't stuff keywords ("best skin doctor Anand best acne doctor Gujarat") into your business name or website. It reads as spam to people and machines.
- Don't buy fake reviews. Platforms remove them, and AI tools are getting better at spotting unnatural patterns.
- Don't expect overnight results. AI tools refresh what they know over weeks, not hours. Steady, accurate information wins.
